Hajj is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and an obligation for every Muslim who is physically and financially able to perform it at least once in their lifetime. Every year, millions of Muslims from around the world gather in the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah to complete this sacred pilgrimage.

Understanding each step of Hajj before your journey will help you perform the rituals with confidence, peace of mind, and devotion.

Step 1: Enter the State of Ihram

Before reaching the Miqat (designated boundary), pilgrims enter the sacred state of Ihram.

This includes:

• Wearing the prescribed Ihram garments (for men).
• Making the intention (Niyyah) for Hajj.
• Reciting the Talbiyah:

"Labbayk Allahumma Labbayk, Labbayka La Sharika Laka Labbayk. Innal Hamda Wan Ni'mata Laka Wal Mulk, La Sharika Lak."

Pilgrims remain in the state of Ihram until certain rituals are completed and must observe the rules associated with it.

Step 2: Arrive in Mina (8th Dhul Hijjah)

On the 8th day of Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims travel to Mina.

During this day:

• Perform the five daily prayers.
• Spend the night in Mina.
• Increase your remembrance of Allah through dua and dhikr.

Step 3: Stand at Arafat (9th Dhul Hijjah)

The Day of Arafat is the most important part of Hajj.

Pilgrims travel to the Plain of Arafat and spend the afternoon in worship by:

• Making sincere dua.
• Seeking forgiveness.
• Reciting the Qur'an.
• Remembering Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad ï·º described this standing at Arafat as the essence of Hajj.

Step 4: Spend the Night at Muzdalifah

After sunset on the Day of Arafat, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah.

Here they:

• Pray Maghrib and Isha.
• Collect small pebbles for the stoning ritual.
• Spend the night under the open sky.

Step 5: Stone the Largest Jamarah (10th Dhul Hijjah)

On the morning of the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, pilgrims return to Mina and throw seven pebbles at Jamarat al-Aqabah while remembering Allah.

This symbolizes rejecting the temptations of Shaytan.

Step 6: Offer the Sacrifice (Qurbani)

Pilgrims who are required to do so offer an animal sacrifice to commemorate the obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).

Many pilgrims arrange this through authorized services before their journey.

Step 7: Shave or Trim the Hair

Men usually shave their heads completely or trim their hair.

Women trim a small portion of their hair.

After this, many of the restrictions of Ihram are lifted.

Step 8: Perform Tawaf al-Ifadah

Pilgrims return to Masjid al-Haram to perform Tawaf al-Ifadah by circling the Kaaba seven times.

This is one of the essential pillars of Hajj.

Step 9: Perform Sa'i

After Tawaf al-Ifadah, pilgrims perform Sa'i by walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah.

This commemorates the efforts of Hajar (AS) as she searched for water for her son, Prophet Ismail (AS).

Step 10: Continue the Days of Mina

Pilgrims return to Mina and spend the Days of Tashreeq (11th–13th Dhul Hijjah).

Each day they throw seven pebbles at each of the three Jamarat while remembering Allah.

Step 11: Perform the Farewell Tawaf

Before leaving Makkah, pilgrims perform Tawaf al-Wada (Farewell Tawaf), circling the Kaaba one final time as they prepare to return home.

This marks the completion of Hajj.
